I am the speeding spark of light flung by God from the forge of Chaos. I soar on wings swifter than wind above the paths of the pulsing stars. Faster! faster! to find the place where cosmic waves crash ashore: to cast anchor off that empty coast, that far frontier and final reach of created things: -- the edge of heaven.

Jonas Hallgrimson, The Vastness of the Universe (1837)

As a female artist of Icelandic descent, water and the sea are a nurturing source of inspiration that I return to again and again. In many ways, the shape of me is due to the force of them. My personal family history is closely tied to the ocean. While my mother had a huge fear of water, my father was all for it - he’d roar to life when we’d go out on our old 16’ cabin cruiser, charting out for some unknown destination that only he knew, instinctually, the location of. As a kid, I’d stand out on deck and marvel at the immensity and fickle beauty of all that surrounded me - distant islands fading with the light, clouds rising and then feathering away, a sudden shift in the weather that came without warning. Those experiences made me more attentive. They also gave me strength. What Icelanders know about the sea - how they have historically related to its spiritual and cosmic force - is the heritage that I draw from. My Ocean series is my effort to show how light and water, beauty and energy, heaven and earth come together in my own far frontier.
